My name is John Cottrell. I’m originally from Oakland, California, but I now reside in Salt Lake City, Utah.
I initially moved to and settled in Salt Lake City from the Bay Area in 1994 to complete a clinical psychology internship. I eventually earned my Ph.D. and have worked in various arenas: child and adolescent psychotherapy, drug and alcohol treatment, psychological and neuropsychological testing, and group/couples therapy.
My career shifted gears when I discovered the practice of yoga. While fascinated by the fitness and nutrition, I devoted my recreational time to aerobics and weight lifting. It was in 2000 when I added yoga to my fitness routine. After practicing yoga for about a year, I discovered how incredibly healing and helpful yoga was to me. It led me to became a certified yoga instructor. For a few years, though, I saw my psychology work and my yoga teaching as two different entities.
It wasn’t until 2007 when the lightbulb came on! While still working as a psychotherapist, teaching yoga classes, and eventually working one-one-one with yoga students, I had an “ah-ha” moment. I realized how yoga and therapy overlapped. The two coincided with each other and it helped steer my new career path. I discovered the the therapeutic value of yoga history, philosophy, and practice.
In 2008, I established “mbody, LLC.” Under this entity, I continue to offer group yoga classes as an E-RYT500, Yoga Therapy as a Certified Yoga Therapist (IAYT), and private yoga lessons, workshops, retreats, and trainings.
My intention through these various forms of working with people is to help others recognize their authentic selves. Through yoga, one can seek, discover, and nurture their fullest potential.
If you take one of my Power Yoga Classes, you will be faced with the truth of your own strength, power, and ability. You will walk away feeling confident, rejuvenated, and inspired.
