Lessons in Mindfulness in Regard to Health and Fitness

In our life together, my wife and I have endeavored to understand and maintain our health and fitness. To that end, we have read many books, articles, research, and studies related to the subject. We have taken classes, attended workshops, and participated in seminars in an attempt to increase our knowledge and to help us apply the most up-to-date concepts in the discipline of health and fitness in our own lives. Over the years we have learned many things, considered much, and have accepted and rejected many ideas from practiced professionals in the field.

Recently, we have been reviewing the reems of information we have collected over the past thirty years related to health, exercise, and nutrition. As we have begun to evaluate the data, we have highlighted some nuggets of wisdom to assist you with the application of health and fitness. The following is a living and breathing list of concepts to think about as you develop a health and fitness method for yourself. This is by no means intended as an exhaustive list, but we share it here as a service.  We can only offer you the knowledge we have gathered, and we trust it will be adventitious for you!

  • Begin with the idea that this will be a lifestyle change rather than a short-term, get weight off and get fit, idea. Discuss your desire with your physician and other health professionals prior to starting any diet or exercise program, especially it you have any special needs. If you have a diet and/or exercise program in mind that you would like to do, discuss it with your physician and get his/her support for your lifestyle change. With their support you will be more successful.
  • There are many well-educated and trustworthy health and fitness people who are extremely gifted and helpful to the clients they serve. They are found in your community, education centers, and even online. As you work on your health and fitness, seek out these folks to assist you with your objectives. You can find many of these experts right here on this website.
  • However, the field of health and fitness is replete with individuals who set themselves up as “guru’s” and “experts” in exercise, diet, and nutrition.  There are many voices recommending that you follow this diet, take that supplement, or employ a certain brand of exercise. Although some of the advice these people give may be correct, the implementation of their suggested programs may not be right for you. It is our considered opinion that you are the best expert in the world when it comes to your own health and fitness. So, study the material available on your own, seek out guidance you can trust from people you have faith in, follow your own diet and supplement program, and exercise in the way that is best suited for you. There are many choices available to you in your community, so take advantage of them! Every little step you take will make you healthier and more fit as you try to reach your goals.
  • As we have studied health and fitness, we have discovered that physical fitness is founded on certain principles. You can think of them as platforms or building blocks. These pillars are related to strength, endurance, flexibility, nutrition, pure water, breathing, the expansion of the mind, and the development of the spirit. As you work on these things, you will have a feeling of health and well-being in your daily life.

Diet is a highly controversial subject. There are as many diets in the world as there are people to develop them. While looking for or considering a diet, remember “moderation in all things” rather than what you can or cannot eat. We are just that…. individuals. This is why a specific diet may work for your friend but may not work for you. Blood type, DNA, chemical makeup, specific needs, metabolism, and more determine how successful a diet is for you. The diet you embrace should help you feel and look healthy. Research and choose wisely. Don’t forget to consult your physician.
